WEST COAST 60 METER MARK! Michael phoned me this morning at Top Catch Takapuna with his wkd trip report. Both days through the south channel and out to the 60m mark on the westside. On Sat he was out with traditional bait anglers using the westside tackle setup. While his 20lb fluorocarbon leader on 10 lb braid on his fairywand combo was given the snort of derision. Suffice to say from the photos I received from Michael he smashed em bro! At anchor he dropped his 80 - 100 gms inchiku into the Tasman gave them a couple of vigorous pitches on the seafloor and described to me his satisfaction in having his rod buckle over with bigger and more fish including 2kg sized gurnard compared to the traditionalist for the entire Sat session. It was a repeat on Sunday with his Dad but this time also using big 7 softies and home tied big saltwater flies on 2 oz ball sinkers to drag them down. Any green and gold colours was the preferred look down there. Less sharks were also attracted on Sunday compared to the baited Saturday Michael commented. Good job Michael! And thank you for sharing with us your TR. On the Hauraki side guys reported good action North of Tiri in the morning some were binned out and home by 8.30. And from 3pm onwards it went mental behind the Noises and from Martins Bay through to Moturoa. In close it was halcyon. A day to remember with fish spiked hands and sore arms. This mid week looks a bit damp on the weather side but Dr Mick is on holiday now from uni. And he dropped in at noon to tell me about the cool stick baiting session he experienced in the Rangi channel this am. Playing with 80 cm sized Kings on green coloured 130mm Williamson stick baits. Thanks for letting me sniff your fingers Dr but I do believe you! With these N winds pushing in the warmer water its now my plan to start fishing the local channels into the twilight zone as the sunsets behind Taka tower. Its time to prospect closer to home this week. Paul Chen
