WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN: David barnhill was born October 30,1914 in Greenville North Carolina. he wa a pitche in the Negro Leagues who went by the nicknames of Impo or Skinny. his 12 year career began in 1937 and ended in 1949 and during that time he pitched for the following teams: Miami Giants 1936 Zulu Giants 1937 Ethiopian CLowns 1937-1940 New York Cubans 1941-1949 Various minor leagues 149-1953 He was small in stature at 57 145lbs but he was a fireballing strikeout artist. He was also thought to be one of the top pitchers in teh Negro Leagues during the 1940s. He was chosen to start the 1943 East/West All Star game and his foe on the mound was the great Satchel Paige. Before pitching against each other in teh All Star gamre the two had met twice previously at Yankee Stadium with each one winning a game with Barnhills being a shutout. During his prime he recieved a telegram with regards to him being the first Negro to play in the majors since Moses Walker in the 1880s. barnhill was rated asure fire prosepect as it would be him, Roy Campenella and Sammy Hughes who were going to be given the oppurtunity to try out for the Pittsburgh Pirates. However bigotry won out and the threee did not get a chance to show their talent. Barnhill stayewd with the New York Cubans and ended up pitching them to a Negro National title in 1947 with a victory over the Cleveland Buckeyes. he played in the minors with the Minneapolis Millers of the American Association from 1949 to 1951 but his age kept him from getting a fair shout at the major leagues. He worked for the city of Miami FLorida in the recreation departmen before passing away in Miami at the age of 68 on January 8,1983
