WHERE, INDEED?? Horrible piece by Keris Jän Myrick. President of NAMI. First of all she brags about using mental health money for peer support. There is no evidence that peer support improves meaningful outcomes in anyone with serIous mental illness. I realize she has a self interest in it (She is president of a peer support org), but as an advocate for people with mental illness? She also rightly notes how many persons with mental illness are incarcerated, without acknowledging her role. NAMI has a policy on AOT, preserving hospitals, and civil commitment that can reduce the number incarcerated. Instead of supporting that, she diverts money to peer support and opposes the policies!!!. I think she totally missed the mark of today. We have to speak truth to power. NAMI has power but has abandoned the most seriously ill. Todays the day to speak up against what NAMI is doing.
