WHY AM I CATHOLIC? This has been a question posed by some “Christians” who call themselves ‘born again’ so much so to conceive themselves as the one and only true believers according to what the holy scripture says. This comes to mind that each has to reconcile oneself to what really is the truth about what one believes. Believing is something not just an emanating incidence in one’s idea or conviction but of a universal value. Say for example, that one added to one is two. To mean that mathematical language is of a universal value, not just a certain belief that one added to one is two but a universal expression of truth and fact that indeed one added to one is two. So also with religious truths and doctrines as what was asked by Pilate in his encounter with the Son of the most high “what is truth?”. As it has been an established fact that this Jesus of Nazareth who was born of the woman in Bethlehem is the Son of the most high “(cf. Lk.1,31). He himself proved this to mankind by his power to cure illnesses beyond medical remedies and bringing back to life the dead and finally resurrecting from the dead. To which truth is also testified and affirmed by the Father “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” (Mt.3,17) and in the Transfiguration “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him.” (Mt. 17,5) But then again why CATHOLIC? A question posed not only by ‘born again’ but by the many denomination posing as Christians especially that of the mainline protestant denominations which sprang up from the dates of the Lutheran upheaval. First let me trace it back from the basic etymology of the word. The Webster’s dictionary defines as [[ME catholik < L catholicus, universal, general
