WHY PROF. OBA ABDULRAHEEM MUST NOT BE MADE KWARA GOVERNOR From The Archive - By Bashir Akanbi This piece is not aimed at adding to the already trivial political-strength of Prof. Oba Abdulraheem but unclothing the demon behind his personality. It is always saddening, seeing an old man of no excellence parading himself as an Angel before people, whereas, he is hierarchically next to Devil (Satan). Oba Abdulraheem right from time has always been desperate for power and can chase it by all means. Record has it that, he has always betrayed the ladders on which he climbed to reach the top. I have my facts on his treacheries over his professorship and VCship journey. If his professorship and VCship are decade (s) old, we are not all ignorant of how he got his previous job (Kwara Polytechnic Governing Councils Chairmanship) and his present (Federal Character Commission’s Chairmanship). What was his later antics towards his young boss (Sen. Abubakar Bukola Saraki) he has always esteemed? Disloyalty and Impunity are the outcome. Now, let us navigate through facts about him in a clockwise order of his frivolous carrier to see reasons why he is the most incredible candidate for Kwara and kwarans. A- ACADEMIC FACTOR - He is the only Professor in Ilorin that is well certificated but academically unproductive. - To be a Professor requires you to have written certain number (though differs from Universities to Universities but none is below 20) of articles published in local and international journals, where are his academic papers? - He has not up to 10 academic papers: this made some Senators queried his Professorship when he first appeared before the Red Chamber of the National Assembly for Federal Character Commission appointment in 2007. His confirmation was later perfected by Sen. Bukola Saraki who nominated him. The lobbying was channeled through the likes of Smart Adeyemi, David Mark among others. - As a Professor of Literature, he has never written any novel, poem, prose or other literary books. Even Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah has many of such books widely read locally and internationally. - When Professors in his field are mentioned in Nigeria or anywhere in the world, he’s nowhere to be found. - His Professorship in Bayero University of Kano was manipulated by power, not on due merit. B- MANAGERIAL FACTOR - He’s a dictator: whenever he talks or decides, he can’t be defied or goaded. - He’s not a conflict manager: gets annoyed at any slighted provocation and ready to destroy whatever is on ground. - His antecedents show that he has never ruled a place without crisis: examples are Unilorin, where he left reluctantly with a lot of crisis; Kwara Polytechnic, virtually all the staff there curse him till today for influencing former Governor Mohammed Lawal to cut down their salaries; Federal Character Commison, where staff of the commission carried “Oba must go” placards for about three times. - His records in Unilorin, Kwara Polytech and Federal Character Commission show that he is not workers’ friendly. - He sacked many workers unjustifiably in University of Ilorin and even threatened to sack more. This is a case of 49 unlawfully sacked lecturers of Unilorin, including his brother from Ilorin, Professor Sholagberu who described him as a ‘misbegotten brother’ and left Unilorin for Lagos on invitation. - He expelled students activists and withheld the results of some graduating activists in 2001 for trying to uncover his shady deals and mismanagement. Thank God justice later smiled at Comrade Richard Akinola and Rasheedat Adeshina as Supreme Court described Oba Abdulraheems action unconstitutional and ordered the University of Ilorin to release their academic records and degree couple of weeks ago. - His egocentric action on Com. Akinola Richard and Rasheedat Adeshina fifteen years ago was detrimental financially to The Universitys treasury as The Supreme Court also ordered the sum of seven million naira (#7,000,000) and five million naira (#5,000,000) respectively to them as exemplary damages. - He also sacked many workers in the Kwara State Polytechnic for fighting for their rights. This led to a short strike action in 2006 and later resulted in bigger strike in 2008. One of his brothers from Ilorin, Mr. Jos Alanamu, the institution’s ASUP head also lost his job untimely that year. - He cut down workers salary as he liked in University of Ilorin and Kwara Polytechnic, Ilorin. - He digresses slots meant for Nigerians and Kwarans to just his Okekere area, Oke-Imole of Ilorin, political associates and admirers. He has little or no attention for Afin (Palace division) of Ilorin on his acclaimed job giving. What about people of Kwara North or South for he has never considered them for anything? The syndrome with which he ruled in Unilorin and FCC has not been cured up till date. - If Federal Character Chairman which was given to him by Sen. Saraki is removed in his life, I swear Oba Abdulraheem is a naked devil. He will have no power-spring to facilitate anything for anybody. This is because he is not a philanthropist but an opportunist. -Like I wrote earlier in one of my pieces about three (3) months ago that, if Oba Abdulraheem can give his two (2) most juicy FCC jobs, NDIC and PTDF to his son, Ayo Abdulraheem and his younger brother’s son, Bolaji Abdulraheem respectively but throws people’s sons and daughters away from parents and spouses for damp jobs”, then where is the justice and equity? C- FINANCIAL RECKLESSNESS - The INSIDER magazine revealed how Professor Oba squandered the resources of Unilorin around August 2002. - He siphoned the initial fund meant for d construction of the Senate building and Auditorium of the school and brought Prof. Shamsudeen Amali to cover up. We are not unaware that Prof. Oba had access to University of Ilorin’s treasury throughout Amali’s tenure. - He continued using all Unilorin’s resources in the areas of Security, power (fueling of generator), and maintenance of his household for about 7 years after his administration. It took Oloyede a lot of courage to stop it after Amali’s administration. That caused a lot of rancor between him and Prof. Oloyede then and has partly barricaded their relationship till now. - It took the intervention of some notable Ilorin men like Justice Mustapha Akanbi and Gen. Abdullahi Adangba to rescue him from the financial allegation leveled against him in 2002. Both of them are still alive today. - The missing N630 million in the FCC in the early assumption of his first tenure is lingering in the commission. D- HIS TREACHROUS RECORD – He denied virtually all those who helped him to become VC in 1997. - He claims to be helping Ilorin indigenes, yet he fought seriously to prevent the emergence of Ilorin candidates for VCship in 2002, 2007 and 2012. - He prevented Prof. Sheu Jimoh in 2002; Prof. Sheu Jimoh, Ajetunmobi, Hassan Salihu and Abdulganeey Hambali in 2007. Hence, has poor relationship with Hassan Saliu and Abdulganeey Hambali till today. - Prof. Ajetunmobi couldn’t forgive him till his death. - What about his former teacher,Alh. (Late) Ahmad Hamid of IEDPU? He was rude to him and ditched him at the end. - He named his campaign team a freedom camp, as against the camp that made him a politician. Was he not a proud student of Saraki’s political school of though again? - He is too desperate for power, even at old adage. His over-ambition makes him to support the fruitless and bootless Goodluck Ebele Jonathan despite his total rejection by the poor Nigerians and kwarans. E- HIS MORALS - His morality is questionable: he talks to people anyhow, to an extent of abusing the person of Dr. Olusola Saraki after his death. This caused serious hardness of heart among them as the likes of Gbemi Saraki and other team members reacted. - He pretends by appearing to people like a man of God but can do anything to gain power (even from the devil). You need to see how he buries COWS as sacrifices to them (the gods)? Fellow kwarans, as you could all see, Oba Abdulraheem’s antecedents are full of betrayal, dishonesty, duplicity, treachery, anti-people, anti-student and anti-human right. An English adage says as quoted thus, “He who seeks equity must come with clean hands”, Oba Abdulraheem is a great pretender whose hands are full of shoddy deals. He pretends as a patriot while in desperate quest for power but when empowered, he becomes a ruler not a leader and that God forbids for Kwara State. These are just little, out of the outrageous facts to be heralded about him soon.
