WHY THIS CONTROVERSY? I, Major Zia, on behalf of our Great Leader, the Supreme Commander of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, do hereby proclaim the independence of Bangla Desh, Ziaur Rahman announced on March 27, 1971, from Biplobi Betar Kendra at Kalurghat in Chittagong, identifying Mujib as the sole leader of the elected representatives of 75 million people of Bangladesh. The provisional Mujibnagar government, formed in April and headed by Sheikh Mujib, made him a sector commander and promoted him to the rank of lieutenant colonel. After Bangabandhus assassination in August 1975, Zia became one of the three deputy chief martial law administrators, replaced then president Sayem later in April 1977 and quickly organized a referendum that gave him “overwhelming support” to continue as president. In June 1978, General Zia organized a presidential election in which he defeated his former commanding officer in the War of Liberation, General MAG Osmany. This is what history books say. But Zias elder son Tarique Rahman and widow Khaleda Zia now demand Zia was the first president of Bangladesh. What could be the motive of creating such a controversy for a nation which is already weary of the debate that Zia first proclaimed independence?
