WHY WHY WHY! The Strikers media release today says Damaging spin duo, Johan Botha and Jon Holland will return to the Adelaide Strikers for BBL|04, completing one of the most enviable bowling line-ups in the KFC T20 Big Bash League. Botha, although his action is suspect, is a proven short form cricketer, but you must question why Holland gets another gig. The release also explains the Holland is on the comeback trail from injury, and Left-arm orthodox spinner took four wickets in his four appearances for the Adelaide Strikers last season, including 2-19 against the Melbourne Renegades in the last game of the season. That is hardly a great claim. Hollands Twenty20 record is modest at best - 16 games for 11 wickets - average 29.64, at a modest economy rate of 7.09 runs per over. The media release as suggests, Holland was in good form throughout the Matador One-Day Cup, taking eight wickets at an economy rate of 5.29 including an impressive 3/39 against the Western Warriors in his most recent match. Isnt T20 cricket a completely different form of the game than the 50 over version. Holland certainly has not been picked for his fielding or his batting. His highest score in two trips to the crease is five in T20 cricket, but it is conceded opportunities for lower order batsmen are limited. The Adelaide Strikers’ bowling line-up now includes young leg-spinner, Adam Zampa as well as pacemen Shaun Tait, Michael Neser, Ben Laughlin, Kane Richardson, Gary Putland and Chadd Sayers, along with Botha and Holland now. Adelaide Strikers coach, Darren Berry (who needs to see something in the SA trophy cabinet soon) is excited to have so many bowling options at his disposal. “I believe we have one of the best bowling line-ups in the league and these new signings will add to the selectors’ headaches as we pick our best side for each game,” said Berry. “The addition of Botha and Holland rounds out our spin attack nicely. “Jon Holland definitely showed glimpses of his best last season and in the recent Matador One-Day Cup; we are excited to have him back in the side again this summer.” Isnt there a local product in the SACA Premier League competition that deserves this contract in front of him. Young Tom Andrews comes to mind, without much thought. It could be suggested that Holland could have gain a contract as a net bowler. Opinion is that of writer Peter Argent and not necessarily the view or opinion of Our Sporting Life SA. The Adelaide Strikers BBL|04 squad so far: Johan Botha, Jono Dean, Travis Head, Brad Hodge, Jon Holland, Phil Hughes, Trent Lawford, Ben Laughlin, Tim Ludeman, Michael Neser, Kieron Pollard, Gary Putland, Kane Richardson, Chadd Sayers, Craig Simmons, Shaun Tait, Adam Zampa.
