WINDOWS TALK: Are you ready for April 8, 2014? On that date WinXP will officially be retired. This is really no surprise, or shouldnt be; we’ve known since 2008 that Microsoft would end paid assisted support, security updates, non-security hotfixes, and updates to online technical documentation for WinXP in 2014. According to Robert Johnston, a marketing director at NCR, the largest ATM supplier in the U.S., WinXP dominates the ATM market, powering more than 95% of the world’s machines and a similar percentage in the U.S. Come April, if a serious security flaw is found in WinXP, the banks will be on their own to defend against high-tech criminals. The banks do have plans to upgrade, but a complete migration will take several years. From a security perspective this is an issue. But for some, compliance can be a larger issue. If you manage personal data there are industry and federal regulations (PCI, Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, etc.) that you need to comply with. Using a non-supported operating system is a compliance no-no. During this transition, everyone is feeling the pressure of keeping their data and infrastructure secure. To that end, Edsquare Consulting offers comprehensive services to help assess your environment and recommend steps to limit your exposure.
