WTAMU to Host Allyson Ford Project and National Speaker on Distracted Driving CANYON, Texas—Jacy Good, national speaker with the Hang Up and Drive program will share her story about distracted driving as part of West Texas A&M University’s Allyson Ford Project at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5 in Legacy Hall of the Jack B. Kelley Student Center on campus. WTAMU’s PULSE (Peer Educators) is hosting the Allyson Ford Project and lecture to raise awareness about distracted driving and its consequences. Ford was a freshman at WTAMU when she was driving home to Channing in September 2012. While driving, she checked her phone, lost control of her car and died in a preventable distracted driving accident. Ford’s family established the Allyson Ford Project to raise awareness, and the winner of a $1,000 WTAMU scholarship from an area high school distracted driving poster contest will be announced. A WTAMU student also will be announced the winner of a $1,000 scholarship for a project focused on distracted driving. The winning project will be implemented into next year’s Allyson Ford Project event. Just hours after graduating from college, Jacy Good and her parents were heading back to Lancaster, Pa., when their car was hit head-on by a tractor trailer. The truck had swerved to avoid a man turning left at a red light. That man was talking on his phone. Good’s parents were killed and after hours of surgery, the new college graduate was given only a 10 percent chance of survival. After a long road to recovery, Good began her campaign for a cell phone ban in her home state of Pennsylvania. Since then, she has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and shared her story with thousands of people across the country in stories, conferences and news pieces. Her goal is to encourage people to make safer choices, companies to develop and enforce cell phone policies and have laws in place to protect the public. The event is free and open to the public.
