WTF!!!??? This is terrible news :( Cant think of Bereket without diving into a nostalgia trip, so here goes: When my college boyfriend and I moved to NYC weeks after graduation (10 yrs ago), neither of us had any real $$. I was always covering shows downtown @ Cake Shop, Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge, CBGBs, Knitting Factory, Midway, etc and The Library was our favorite bar, so naturally, our #1 neighborhood choice was Alphabet City. We managed to find a deal on a tiny place on Avenue A and promptly located all the local cheap food and bodega-priced cigarettes. By night wed live off of Bereket kebabs, Punjabis dollar samosas, Alt Coffee, Cafe Himalaya specials, Rays 50 cent pizza-bagels. Bareket was always a necessary stop after shows and was always packed. Our order was always the same (doner for me, falafel for him) and the talkative, goofball staff always put a smile on our faces. It wasnt long until they knew us and would let us sneak by when we didnt have enough cash, knowing wed be good for it on our next visit. I know this is just part of the NY experience -- the inevitable neighborhood turnover -- but damn, this one feels like such a crappy surprise. Goodbye to yet another key part of whats made this place home. .....sigh......
