Wai Khru’s Day : Time for teacher Wai Khru Day is celebrated in June across Thailand to honour the teachers who tirelessly disseminate invaluable knowledge and experience to their students. For this week we take a look at some of the different traditional Wai Khru offerings. Wai Khru ceremonies are special for both teachers and students throughout Thailand. It is the time once a year when students officially pay homage to their teachers with trays decorated with joss sticks, candles and the four traditional offerings of kao tok (popped rice), dok makua (pea eggplant flowers), dok kem (Ixora flowers) and yah praek (Burmuda grass). GRAIN OF TRUTH Popped rice is made from rice grains that have been softened by being soaked in water for several hours. The rice is then roasted until the white rice grains inside poke out of the chaff. Symbolically, the rice grains represent students, while the water represents the gentleness of teachers. The process of roasting represents the strict discipline that teachers also sometimes need to enforce. HUMAN HUMILITY Pea eggplant flowers represent the quality of modesty. When the flowers are fully grown, they face downwards toward the ground, representing the way that students should bow or modestly show respect to their teachers. SHARP AND STRONG Ixora flowers have a sharp edge, which symbolises the sharp minds and intelligence of students. Burmuda grass is a durable type of grass that can survive hot and dry conditions. This implies that exemplary students should persevere with their studies in class if they want to achieve success in their lives.
