Wanted to go have Mexican on Friday night so we saddled up the - TopicsExpress

Wanted to go have Mexican on Friday night so we saddled up the family truckster and headed to our favorite [and close] Mexican Restaurant, Mi Pueblo. (The one on Fairmont Ave across the bridge from Downtown) We pull up and it was empty! It was closed! We then decide, as all people in this town have come to the conclusion of, that heading to Whitehall is our next closest option. I recognize the friendly waiter that came to our table as a gentleman that served us at the downtown Mi Pueblo. He said they were sorry and had to close because the taxes in Fairmont were too high. Im not sure if what he said is 100% true...but Ive heard enough whispers around, heard stories of when they started that business up and can easily glance around, as anybody can, and see the state of disrepair Fairmont is in to where Im raising my eyebrows a bit wondering why?? Im not writing this from the perspective of the selfish woes of a middle aged white guy that wants a cheap place to buy Mexican Food and now has to drive 12 miles instead of 4. Im looking at the bigger picture. The question begs to be asked. Why are Whitehall, Morgantown and Bridgeport thriving, and Fairmont cant quite get their act together? Is it the older infrastructure? Is it poor city management? Is it extremely unlucky businesses? Is it a poor population base in the immediate area? Is it something historical that Im missing since I have not lived here my whole life? Admittedly, a main street business is becoming tougher and tougher and maybe its a little of everything? Not sure about the cities perspective, but I woulda have fought tooth and nail to keep CJ Maggies and Mi Pueblo in this town. Now they are both gone. Fairmont has merely become a place between thriving cities to live because its cheaper. I think Fairmont can be more. Especially with the new connector and the City managers seeing the value of the new Palatine Park project. I dont know enough about the situation to place blame on any one party (govt vs private industry??) Have we just had a lot of bad luck? Too small of a tax structure? Has anything been spoken of about the land up at the I79/Connector? I saw some conversation about Sheetz coming into town over at topix and how somebody was shooting that idea down because its not a tourist thing where people come in and give the area a positive cash flow. My idea of a thriving city is not JUST touristy stuff or a place to vacation as this person suggested. The bigger picture is one of say a classy well-lit place to get off the Downtown Fairmont Exit like a Sheetz. Consumer then sees the value of exiting and maybe looks around to opening their own business or wandering on down toward Palatine Park and saying...Wow, I never knew this was here. Those businesses then create a buzz around town and the success spreads towards Fairmont. Is the Sheetz topic dead...is there any chance for the Connector area to be the catalyst point for a better Fairmont?? At this point it honestly seems to be the only hope left and as the name suggests a connector to the outside world/capital. Just a pipe dream people....and something to illicit conversation. I hope to hear some feedback and maybe even the historical perspective on whats happened before the 5 years we began living here. Love to hear from you.....Craig
