‘Wastage leading to food products price rise’ Kolkata, 10 November: Harsimrat Kaur Badal, minister of food processing industries, government of India, today said that wastage of food in the country is leading to the surge in the prices of food products Apart from Ms Badal, Mr Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury, minister, department of food processing, industries and horticulture, government of West Bengal, Dr Pardip Kumar Mazumdar, adviser, agriculture to the Chief Minister, government of India and other dignitaries graced the seminar on Agriculture and Food Processing: opportunities and challenges- Focus Eastern India. The seminar was organised by Bharat Chamber of Commerce today. Ms Badal said that the amount of food wasted in India is equivalent to what the United Kingdom consumes. Drawing comparison with the rest of the world with regard to the low yield per hectare, she said that there is a need to address these issues and come up with solutions. Stressing on the need to develop food processing industries, Ms Badal also said that Rs 2000 crore have been set aside for the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) from where interested farmers or entrepreneurs can take loan at a lower interest rate. Hailing the North-east as the ideal destination for organic farming, she said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is doing everything to improve the infrastructure of the North-east so as to facilitate organic farming. She further said that 16 states have so far abolished the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act. However, the act is still in force in West Bengal. sns
