JUSTIN KOSKI — NOVEMBER 6, 2014 Police officers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida came to a homeless outreach in which Christians were helping feed the homeless and arrested those distributing food. The Christian Organization Love Thy Neighbor has no intentions of stopping his outreach. Advertisement-content continues below The group’s leader, 90-year-old Arnold Abbott, as well as other Reverends could face up to $500 and/or 60 days in jail for violating an ordinance that prohibits public food sharing, panhandling, and anything considered “life sustaining,” according to the Broward-Palm Beach News Times. This new ordinance was approved and designed by Fort Lauderdale in October and designed to limit outdoor homeless feeding sites, according to Mad World News. “We are simply trying to feed people who are hungry,” the cited Rev. Canon Mark Sims said to Sun-Sentinel. “To criminalize that is contrary to everything that I stand for as a priest and as a person of faith.” Another cited Reverend Dwayne Black added, “I don’t think the city has a right to tell us we can’t feed the homeless, this is breaking my Christian vows.” The officers didn’t allow the group to finish feeding the homeless and removed all the food from the station, while many hungry homeless people had to watch their meal leave before their eyes.
