Watford’s New Market is Taking Shape Watford’s new market is rapidly taking shape, 14 of the shipping containers that will be used to construct it have arrived on site and work has started on the steel frame that will support them. The new market is to be made up of 44 shipping containers spread over two floors. In the coming days work will continue on the steelwork and more of the containers are expected next week. Set to open in the autumn, the location of the new market puts it at the heart of Watford’s shopping district. Accessible from the High Street and Beechen Grove, it is on a site next to the former TJ Hughes building on the newly refurbished Parade. The innovative use of shipping containers means construction can take place quickly and efficiently. It’s not the first time a market has been made out of shipping containers; they were also used to create Brooklyn’s temporary Dekalb Market in New York and BOXPARK in London’s Shoreditch. Says Elected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill: “Watford has had a market since the 12th century and we want to ensure that it will have one for years to come. “I believe that the market shopping experience is important to the character of Watford; it brings range, diversity and atmosphere. The fact that our new market has been created from shipping containers will make it a destination point, attracting new shoppers keen to see how Watford matches up to the successes of Brixton, Spitalfields and…Brooklyn!” The entire market will be covered by a canopy so that trading can continue in all weathers.
