We are not enemies. As I checked in at a parking lot at 6 am near the airport, the attendant read my ID and said: I have the same name as yours. Where are you originally from? I told him that my parents are originally from Syria, then asked him where was he from. He said: I hope you are not pro-Assad? I assured him that I am strongly pro-freedom and anti-Assad. Sounding relieved, he said: I am from Iran and I am sure many of you hate us because our government supports Assad in killing Syrians... I quickly interrupted him and assured him that, as a Muslim, I cannot hate or blame an entire people for the crime of their corrupt and repressive government and that I actually admire the free Iranian people for their courage and resilience in face of that regime. He then felt comfortable to pull up his sleeve and show me his green wrist band to identify his affiliation with and support for Irans Green Revolution which was brutally crushed by Irans autocrats. He added: please know that we feel the pain of the Syrian people and we Iranians are struggling against the same zhalims (oppressors) and for the same cause. One day we all are going to be free insha Allah (God willing). I told him, insha Allah. And reminded him that tyrants rule by creating enemies and fear, but good people dont fall for it. He then proceeded, with teary eyes, to hug me. I admit, I also got teary eyes after his hug. Damned are tyrants and failed leaders who can only rule through repression, brutality, and fear. Our broken world needs so much repair.
