We are very sad to report that Hilda James, who served from 1983-2004 as our Tax Commissioner, passed away peacefully this morning around 7:30 AM. She served the citizens of the County faithfully and discharged her duties with the utmost professionalism and after retirement, she continued to help the county during the busy tax season. Those of us that worked with Hilda knew what a special person she was and how much she loved Butts County and those she worked with. In March of 2003, upon her retirement Hilda made the following remarks: It has been my pleasure to serve the citizens of Butts County as your Tax Commissioner since May 11, 1983. I’ve seen many changes over the past twenty-one years with this office, some good and some bad, but I have a lot of good memories that will be with me far longer than the bad ones will stay around. During my time with you, I have always tried to be a good and careful steward of the taxpayers money by running my office with honesty, integrity, and common sense. I am proud of the work we have accomplished together and I credit an excellent staff with making sure things were done the way they were supposed to be. I want to close by saying that it has been a difficult decision for me to make but I feel that I must move on and allow others to take up this work and continue the progress we have made over the years. I certainly want to thank everyone in Butts County who have supported me over the years and have worked with me to help make this office the best it could possibly be. I also hope that you will now give that same support to Nancy and our staff during this time of transition. Thank you again for your support. Hilda is survived by her daughter, Nancy and son, Wesley, son-in-law Charles, daughter-in-law Vicki, several grandchildren and one great-grandson. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Funeral arrangements will be announced when available.
