We had a couple of loose targets for William over the school - TopicsExpress

We had a couple of loose targets for William over the school holidays. I say loose because I hate either of my children being under pressure. Makaton and ‘no nappy time’ have been the new experiences for the lad. What we forgot to think about was that as soon as the nappy came off, his hands, like most males in this world, are now otherwise engaged. Let’s just say, although the sheriff from Toy Story has taken a back seat, we still see a lot of Woody! The first week was tough as he we had a couple of ‘brown’ disasters. On one occasion I found him trying to wipe his bum with a tea towel. It’s amazing that even through a sea of excrement I felt happy that he had the concept of wiping his bum. After a few dives with the potty in hand, catching the last dribble he eventually went into the kitchen and did a wee in his tortoise shaped potty. He was a stunned as we were overcome. Mum, dad and Madge dancing round the kitchen cheering Billy grinned and hoisted both arms in the air. It was a scene reminiscent of Rod Tidwell’s touchdown celebration (see link). His awareness is growing by the day. Just the other day we were in the bath and rather than pee in the bath, like his sister (who still finds it totally hilarious), he climbed out and did a tinkle in the top of his bath waterfall toy. We presume it was because the top is green like his potty…the wee made the rhythmical decent onto the bathroom floor and the celebrations were interspersed with laughter. When I found out that William has Autism I imagined the worst case scenarios on all aspects of life. The hardest two to come to terms with were him never being able to speak and that he would never be out of nappies. He pee’s like a Blackpool donkey and says ‘good night’ occasionally. I never did like sprinting events at athletics, longer distances were less nerve wracking – I think there is a metaphor in there, somewhere?
