We had a horrific week at the stud, lost two of our top mares after parturition, our first fatalities in 10 years. The first mare, had a very large foal and damaged a nerve, 4 days later, she could still not get up and I made the call to put her down. Her foal was practically dead if it was not for Dr Summer. The second mare had a relatively common complication, a twisted large colon. After 3 hours of emergency surgery at 02h00 of Thursday morning led by Dr Gottschalk and his fantastic team she had a uterine prolapse, reacted negatively to the blood transfusion and by 18h00 she was still in pain and I made the call to put her to sleep too. The post mortem shows the severely compromised colon. Now we are hand rearing two orphans colts. We have hardly slept in 7 days... The point: Breeding is a big responsibility in one week the vet bill is in excess of R120000 and we lost two mares that money cannot replace.
