We had a wonderful night tonight at a reception held in my honor for my candidacy for Rowan County Commissioner. I am humbled to have had Congressman Richard Hudson and Congresswoman Virginia Foxx come down to speak on my behalf. I was also honored to have my friend, NC House member Harry Warren speak and offer his support. Guest speaker James Meacham from the Rowan Tourism Authority spoke passionately about how I led the effort to bring new, productive partnerships between the Chamber, the EDC, the TDA, and Downtown Salisbury while I was chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in 2012. That is a wonderful success story of how we healed old wounds and brought critical organizations together for the good of the community. I think he called it Positive Leadership. What a great night, a wonderful crowd, and lots of encouraging words from friends and people I greatly admire. It was nice to make some new acquaintances too. I spoke for a few minutes and simply discussed our economic challenges and laid out a plan to start moving us in the right direction in December. I told the crowd that last night I stood on a front porch with a couple who drives an hour and a half to work each day because they cant find work in Rowan County. I talked about the need to pay our county employees, law enforcement, and teachers a competitive wage with those of our surrounding counties. Its time we stop training county employees, sheriff deputies, and teachers only to see them leave us for better pay in surrounding counties. That is NOT a sustainable employment model. We can do better, but it is going to take growing our tax base significantly. Do we have a plan to do that? I do. Schools. Jobs. Economy. Make a Plan. Then Lead.
