We have been informed that someone posted a picture of a dog on Kijiji that was allegedly bitten at the Dog Park on March 13, 2014. The DOGS committee is a volunteer organization that helps to maintain and enhance park facilities. We also facilitate communications about dog park rules and etiquette, but we have no authority to enforce rules or deal with disputes between dogs or dog owners at the dog park. According to the Province of Ontario Dog Owners Liability Act, the owner of a dog is liable for damages resulting from a bite or attack by the dog on another person or domestic animal. Altercations like the alleged incident on March 13 is an issue that must be resolved between the two dog owners. If there is no satisfactory resolution between the owners, then the recommended next step is for an owner to contact the police about the incident. An owner may also chose to report the incident to the City of Greater Sudbury who will proceed with steps outlined in the Animal Control by-law and/or the Dog Park by-laws, if applicable. We encourage all dog owners to exercise appropriate control over their dogs while they are in the dog park. We remind owners that dogs demonstrating aggressive behaviour must immediately be removed. To avoid confrontations, please exercise caution when giving a dog a toy or treat to be played with or consumed in the park. Also ensure that you have a leash readily accessible at all times in the event you need to gain control. Here are some additional etiquette tips: • Keep your dog in view at all times. Monitor your dog for possible warning signs and intervene when needed. • Don’t bring an overly excited dog into the park; take it on a walk before-hand. Have your dog eliminate before going to the park. • Supervise dogs when they are playing and interrupt any rough play. • Please do not bring toys your dog may be attached to. These items can provoke aggressive or protective behavior. • Prevent your dog from rushing up on new arrivals to the dog park - some dogs don’t like that. • Stop your dog from jumping up or body slamming people. • If your dog is exhibiting bullying behavior, give it a time out or take him home. Not all dogs are good candidates for off-leash dog parks.
