We have to keep in mind the way the legislative system works. Information we find on facebook can be hard to trust, but this is the way the system works (I actually worked in the House of Representatives at one point). What happens is say a democratic congressman wants to write a bill. He writes House Bill 1034 and House Bill 1034 is primarily dealing with healthcare reform and womens rights for birth control. Then a committee of congressman who support the bill sit down, and write its provisions. For example Provision one: healthcare costs are to have a maximum limit of $100,000 per person. Provison two: All women are to have complimentary birth control provided to them if needed. So here we have the bill. Next, in order to gain votes to pass the bill, the democratic representative that sponsored the bill will have to sit down in committee with some other democrats and even republicans, and allow them to write provisions for the bill so that they will want it passed. These extra provisions DO NOT HAVE TO BE RELATED TO THE ORIGINAL BILL AT ALL. So in order to get the votes needed to pass his bill on healthcare and birth control, our mystery congressman has to then allow things that are not related to healthcare or birth control. A friend of his might add Provision 3: All labor unions are herebye disbanded. A republican whose vote our mystery congressman is trying to win might add Provision 4: Marriage is now legally defined as being between a man and a woman. And the presidents chosen bunch of friends in congress might add Provision 5: No american is allowed to own any firearm ever again. So now, when the Bill gets voted on, its supporters will label it a healthcare bill and its detractors will label it a gun control or gay marriage bill. It goes to a vote. Many people vote for it, many people against it. Assuming it passes, the media for the Democrats will call it a great triumph for healthcare and praise all the congressman involved in writing it. While Republican media will talk about the bill and the congressman who wrote it in a negative light because they voted for gun control and mandatory taxpayer funded birth control. The point is that when you hear someone voted for or against a bill about midgets rights most of the time the people that voted for or against it didnt vote for or against midgets. They voted based on provisions in the bill that were probably never mentioned on the news, provisions that would often times INFURIATE most American citizens, Republican and Democrat. I saw one bill that was passed as increased funding for education that, in the fine print, actually CUT funding for HOPE scholarship, VA benefits, and Social Security. But noone ever mentioned all the bad stuff that passed because of it, all they ever mentioned on the news was how a great step forward in funding education was passed. Be careful of our news and politicians. If they want you to believe something is good, it probably isnt, and vice-versa.
