We learn by the day. Just got to realise every electronic wastes (e-waste) generated across the world ends up in Africa where waste recycling is cheap and done using very crude technology according to Dr. Michael Felten of the Institute of Occupational Medicine. In 2012, North America and EU exported 20 million tones of e-waste into Africa. Nigeria is the biggest importer of e-waste followed by Ghana. Other countries are Benin Rep, Ivory Coast and Liberia. It will shock you to know collectors income ranges between 70 - 240 USD monthly while refurbishers income is between 200 - 250 USD monthly. This is nothing compared to the enormity of hazard in their work space. This has gone on for years without anyone concerned about how this unorganised informal sector operators are exposed to huge Occupational Health risks and Occupational diseases. I am happy for once the project for this health risk evaluation is about to start in Africa with Nigeria also being used as a case study. It may have been bad, we will never stop knocking on doors and asking questions. We will get there but it will not be overnight.
