We mentioned GIS (Geographic Information Systems) a few days ago as one of our valuable tools for coastal resource management. These photos show the use of one component of our GIS system...highly accurate GPS...to map paddling trails. On day with typical conditions, we can map a trail marker with an accuracy a foot or two. As we evaluate paddling trails in our preserves, exact placement of markers and quick replacement of missing markers can make a big difference in how easy the trail is to follow. As our technology and the GPS technology of the public continue to improve, we hope that we can reduce the need for actual physical markers while making the trails easier to follow.
