We need YOUR VOICE. After spending four hours in my local Leichhardt Council meeting, I realise how very important it is for people from ALL walks of life to be given the confidence to have a voice. In the gallery in front of me, two thirty-something year old middle class men constantly muttered throughout all proceedings things like who cares about that, as if thats important, that man looks like a hunchback. It didnt stop. And when the cocky men perked up, it was in support of major commercial housing development in which they obviously had interest. They even at one point scoffed at the concept of Affordable Housing, and in my earshot laughed saying its a dirty word. Their perspective was so skewed by the fact they clearly were driven by money. I truly think they thought they were doing something as honourable as providing clean drinking water for children in Africa! Which is why we need YOUR VOICE. When real people spoke about matters that deeply concerned them, the councillors gave them respect. Even someone as confident speaking as me, had the shakes when I walked to the microphone. But Im so glad I did. Find YOUR VOICE wherever you can. Speak out about abuse at home. Speak out about injustice at your workplace or your childrens school. Speak out about what your Government is doing. Because if REGULAR PEOPLE dont speak out, we are represented by these men in suits. And truly, they didnt give a shit about any of us.
