We passed House Bill 2668, Predetermination Estimate of Patient’s out of pocket costs of health care services, on the last day of session this year. The bill makes Kansas the first state in the Union to be able to determine patients out of pocket costs of health care services in real time mode. The whole process will be automated using a secure HIPAA transaction. The health care industry has been working on this health care cost transparency transaction for eight (8) years. We initially tried to get it done for all the states at the federal level. We realized that it would have to be accomplished at the state level first. Kansas made history by passing it on Friday May 2nd. Kansas Senate passed it with a vote of 38-2 and Kansas House passed with a vote of 97-27. It is on its way to the Governor for his signature.
