We seem capable of bearing truth only in retrospect, merely as a concept, rather than as something palpable and real in the present. We toss truth into the pyre because it threatens the validity of the narrative we keep safely tucked in our heads. We invest much time and effort in fabricating our recollection of the people and events whose names become known to many. At root, history is truth thats been sanitized for convenient and hassle-free consumption. Quite often those who most fervently lash out against the idea of worship are the most fanatical of all. It just happens that state-sanctioned fairy tales are more to their liking.
