We waste about €4bn in food every year, while at the same time 600,000 suffer from some form of food poverty. However, most food banks are too small in scale to deal with the amount of perfectly edible surplus food, but non-profit organisation Bia Food Initiative is addressing this problem with a large food redistribution hub in Cork. And it plan to roll out the idea to Leinster and Connacht soon.
