Weather Forecast good for this years reenactment of Washingtons Crossing of the Delaware. While conditions for this years Crossing of the Delaware pale in comparison to the wintry nor’easter Washington faced in 1776, preparing for the Christmas Day event is not as simple as checking the temperature. Forecasting weather and river conditions has become crucial to assuring the safety of the reenactors for the event, which has been held on Christmas since 1947. The local forecast calls for temperatures in the low 50s with westerly winds between 15 and 25 mph. Frank Lyons, vice president of the Friends of Washington Crossing Park, said that forecast would make for a relatively easy crossing this Christmas. “We really shouldn’t have any problems crossing the river, but there are a lot of interesting dynamics that go into it,” said Lyons, who also portrays Col. John Glover, leader of the 14th Continental regiment, the Marbleheaders. Lyons, and public safety personnel will gauge these factors, which include river depth, which is expected to rise with Christmas Eve rain, in advance of Thursday’s crossing. “We don’t just go out and look at the river and say ‘it looks good’ and go,” Lyons said. Lyons said the forecast for westerly wind would help the boats in their crossing. The annual crossing has also seen more involved safety protocols with the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, Titusville Fire Department and emergency personnel from Upper Makefield. Public safety officials have conducted man overboard drills and implemented other safety measures in recent years, Lyons said. “We’re not going to put our volunteers at risk,” he said. The crossing is tentatively scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday.
