Well folks. Its been just over 2 weeks since the birth of my granddaughter and it has been quite a roller-coaster of emotions for all in our family. Shortly after her birth it was evident that certain areas of skin were red, blistering and looked extremely sore. The following day specialists believed it to be a rare genetic skin condition but conducted a biopsy to be sure. Whilst the diagnosis wasnt really in doubt the prognosis could range from mild to life threatening. Dan and Danni received the results today and it looks as though it is the relatively milder form of EB. Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a group of genetic disorders that result in fragility of the skin and, in some cases, other internal membranes and organs. Blisters, open wounds and sores can form as a result of the slightest touch, rub or trauma. Itll still be a challenge for the three of them but they have a fantastic support network and Isla is ray of light in our lives. Im going to enjoy spoiling her rotten (as a grandad Im allowed to, but dont tell her parents...lol). Shes obviously a Tanner cos shes a little piglet, loves her chow and shes gaining weight rapidly. I am so proud of her Mom and Dad. Whilst the initial response to the news was one of total shock, followed by the emotion curve we go through, the one and only thought was the well being of their little bundle of gorgeousness and they very quickly, amazingly so in my view, set about making plans for her future. Danni has been exhausted and running on autopilot but it hasnt daunted her spirit or her maternal instincts and Dan is total besotted with his beautiful daughter. They feel blessed but she is also a very lucky little girl. As with any newborn the key is to get into a routine and give them a bit of space so they can enjoy being a little family. Hope you all havent dozed off reading this diatribe....lol. Tara a bit...
