Well, just as a predictably scorching July gives way to an equally ugly August (same heat, different day,) we have yet another mass firing at the Arizona Republic, the newspaper everyone used to hate - until it became SO irrelevant that no one even cared what went on. I see they picked off a few of the people I can say I was happy to work with and be around way back in the days before all those little handheld devices conquered the world. Of all the people who worked there during my 15 years and remain employed by Gannett, I can think of only two reporters who would distinguish themselves at ANY newspaper. (Initials: MJP and SM) The rest of the staff I know who remain employed are generally toadies, bootlickers and third-rate hacks. They probably have some ugly things to say about me, too. Everyone gets a turn in the barrel. The green-eyeshade guys dropped my old friend Mike Tulumello over the side after a stint as opinion editor of the southeast Valley edition. Mike, an editorial writer and editor? I have to smile at that, because all the way to the rundown soles of his black Chucks, Mike is a SPORTS writer. He is an excellent sportswriter who deserved a real break in a real sports town (hint: not talking about Phoenix here.)
