Well pride celebration is over and I have a few thoughts on my mind I would like to share. Just because the fun weekend of partying in the name of pride is over does not mean the fight for equality is over. I think we should also remember the real reason we even celebrate pride, because a group of people were tired of being oppressed and fought back. Oppression happens every day, we get angered because we do not have the right to marry the ones we love, yet there are women in other countries who do not even have the right to be educated. Pride was originally a reminder of the stonewall riots. Look up gay pride on google, the only informational website is wikipedia. Everything else is promotional sites for large cities. Go to stonewall riots on wikipedia and they do not even have names for the ones who lead the stonewall riots. It was only in 1969, there are still people alive today that took part in those riots. Why do we not see them today? Why do we not have a keynote speaker at pride talking about why the riots started and what happened during the riots? Instead we have people decked out in thongs and glitter standing up in a public park at a family event that was meant to honor those before us that suffered oppression talking about making sure to "wrap your willy before you stick it in someone". (true story by the way). I think the meaning of pride has been lost, it is no longer about fighting for our rights, pride now is just one massive party. I saw thousands of people during the parade alone, and if each one of those people fought for our rights daily we would see change at a much faster pace. Instead a good portion of those people go home, complain that they do not have their rights and yet do nothing about it. And all the while we complain that we do not have the right to marry the one we love, there are people in other countries who are getting murdered for being gay, sentenced to death because they were raped and their integrity was ruined, and being targeted by the taliban all because they want an education. Oppression is not something that is new, it happens everywhere and unless we do something about it nothing is ever going to happen. I hope more people realize that and take action. Ok so this was more than a few thoughts :)
