Were appealing for witnesses to come forward after a man died after being found in a Burnley canal this afternoon, Friday 17th January. At 12.15pm, police received a report that a man had been found in the Leeds Liverpool Canal close to Ormerod Road behind the Queen Victoria pub. The man was pulled from the water by two passing joggers and was treated at the scene by the police and ambulance service before being taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital. Sadly he was pronounced deceased at 1.40pm The man is believed to be 64 years old and from the Burnley area. Enquires are underway to trace his next of kin and a post mortem examination will be carried out to establish how the man died. Sergeant Alisa Wilson said: “This is a tragic incident and we need the public’s help to understand the circumstances of what happened and establish how he came to be in the water. “From our initial enquires we believe this gentleman has been walking his dog along the canal bank prior to entering the canal so I would appeal to anybody that has seen him to contact police. “His dog was unharmed and was found stood at the side of the canal bank. It has been taken into kennels by the dog warden. “Anyone with information should contact Lancashire Police on 101.”
