Were so far past voter suppression by the party in power that we have voter self-suppression. When there is only about a 30% voter turnout for a by-election, how is it possible to speak about winning the seat? In Whitby-Oshawa, the Conservatives kept former finance minister Flahertys seat with fifty percent of the vote — which might sound like a big win until you do this simple calculation (whats half of thirty?) and get the result: about 15% of eligible voters. So with all the bluff and bluster Ive seen from anti-Harper activists, where are they when the polls are actually open? In some of the activist Facebook groups people are griping about the Harper administration, but then they turn around and say theres no point voting for anyone else either as they are all the same. It seems they believe the attack ads instead of looking closely at the individuals and the stance theyve taken on various subjects in the last few years, inside and outside the House of Commons. That total abdication of voter responsibility functions as a vote for the status quo. So, unless people start actively supporting the opposition party with the best chance to win, were likely to see four more years of the same agenda, the same contempt, the same dismantling of the parliamentary system in favour of the republican model — and is that really working so well?
