What I learned in 2014 – by L. W-BigI-son -Always check for a tan line on a ring finger. -When life throws you a curve ball that will make you be out of your normal comfort zone, smile, take your stance, and get ready to swing hard. -Do not try to operate a motor vehicle while wearing an eye patch. -When someone asks you to check out their “business opportunity”, think wisely. -When a company tells you to “do your research”, start with the people that asked. -Never underestimate the power of prayer. -Having an idea for a book is good. Having 50 ideas and never starting any of them, not so much. -Carbohydrates are not the devil. -There is safety in numbers. There is even more safety in staying home. -When you get a message of “Hey stranger” from someone you have not spoken to in 5 years, remember why they are a stranger before replying. -Don’t take Ebola so personally. -Don’t take North Korea so personally. -Don’t take anything that major news networks say personally. -Always try on a bathing suit. -Constantly pay it forward and give back, even if it is only the smallest of things and trifle amounts. -Call your mother more. -See your father more. -You can draw more than just freaking trees. -Learning a new instrument takes practice. Practice does not include taking photographs of it. -Memory lane is a cool place to visit. As long as the visits are short and spaced far between. -It is okay to occasionally ask for help. It is even better if you help others, without them even having to ask. -Dance like no one is looking. Just remember though that everyone has a cell phone with a recording device on it. -Don’t fall for B.S. -If you fall, remember you can always get back up. -It is your life, meaning that you are in control of it. -When you leave a game, leave and never look back. -Screw Craigslists. -When in doubt, think, pray, meditate. -The only thing that needs to be done right now are the things that cannot wait until tomorrow. -If you did not do the “right now” things today, there is always tomorrow. -Don’t procrastinate. -Improve your vocabulary. -When in doubt, make up words. -Do not ignore the unavoidable. -Screw coupons. -Fear is not an option. -Read more non-fictions, unless it is a really good fiction. -Listen to people younger than you, they just might know something that you do not. -Listen to people older than you, they definitely know something that you do not. -Hear yourself. -Stay away from the Dollar Store. Nothing costs a dollar there. -Educate your mind. -Free your passions. -Love the body you were given. -Let the crap of your past be the fertilizer of your future. -When in doubt, ponder why the doubt. -Always challenge. -Don’t make fun of people less educated. -Always make a war against people that choose to be morons. -Be a better person. -Know when to hold em, when to show em. -Facebook is the DEBIL!!! -Your friends that you know on it are not Debil. -Be proud of yourself. -Be prouder when you get to where you are going. -Above all, remember Suess. After all, that is how you started being you. (“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You. “I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.” “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” “You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go…” “Read. Travel. Read. Ask. Read. Learn. Read. Connect. Read.” “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” “So be sure when you step, Step with care and great tact. And remember that life’s A Great Balancing Act.” “Think and wonder, wonder and think.” “Be who you are and say what you feel because the ones who mind don’t matter, and the ones who matter don’t mind.”) And above all…. “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” Tis a new year. You have 365 days. 365 blank pages of a new chapter in your book of life. How you fill them is up to you. Starting now though, might be a good idea. For all of us.
