What a cooking disaster! I started out to make a quiche, from a recipe given to me by my husbands cousin in Alsace, France. Its similar to quiche Lorraine, except she adds leeks. Quiche comes out of the oven looking great. As Im photographing it, I realize that I forgot to add the cheese! Gruyere, grated by hand. :-/ In an effort to salvage it, I sprinkle the cheese over the top and pop it back in the oven on broil. A minute later, the smoke alarm starts going off! When I pull the quiche out of the oven (and take it to the front door, trying to clear the smoke in the house), the edge of the crust is BLACK. :-( I cut it into pieces anyway and taste. The cheese is a bit crusty; the interior and the bottom of the crust are fine. I plate it, photograph the best-looking piece, and serve it to my daughter, who announces that she cant eat it because an ANT ran over her plate. (Did you kill it? I ask.) :-/ As she brings the plate back to me, I balance my plate on my lap, burning my knee. The pieces of burnt crust fall to the floor, where one of the dogs eats them before I can pick them up. :-/ At least we know the smoke detector works.
