What a great and enjoyable performance tonight. Ive never performed at a VFW before. Which is actually pretty amazing I guess in a 40 year career. But, I really enjoyed it. It was more like a listening room than a bar. You didnt see people sitting around texting all night. They were actually listening, paying attention, appreciating. I even got to do some of the quick wit humor stuff I built my career upon. As well as my humorous songs. Because, it was a crowd that was actually there to listen and give their undivided attention. The new Bose system really shined tonight. Its made all the difference in the world. Ive known for a while that I needed to get into some vocal therapy. After performing several years, to pay the bills, on swollen vocal chords. I totally changed my vocal technique to compensate for the swollen vocal chords. Then when the swelling finally went down. Singing became a much more difficult task. Because, my adapted vocal techniques for swollen vocal chords. No longer worked properly when my vocal chords were no longer swollen. Which had made singing actually very mentally and emotionally, difficult. Basically, I found myself in a place of no longer knowing how to naturally sing. Because, vocal technique good or bad over time becomes automatic. Something you dont recognize, so you dont know how to fix it. Which is where vocal therapy comes in as a necessity. Just like any other occupational therapy. But, amazingly, working with the Bose system allows me to hear what Im doing vocally, better. and more clearly. Tonight I was singing just like the good old days. Totally natural, my full vocal range, no stress or concerns about certain notes when they were coming up. Just like brand new. That in itself has been worth the cost of the Bose system. A couple more months with this system and I think Ill have total confidence to get back in the studio and start recording again. Where you need to be the best you can be. In a live performance you can work around problematic issues. In a recording studio? No way. If you are not 100% when you are in the studio, you should not be in the studio. Because, if you cant record the songs as you hear them in your head. You will become totally disheartened and get yourself pretty emotionally beat up. When you know you are capable of more, but cant find it. It can truly crush your spirit. It was a really fun night, with a lot of great people and I made a lot of new friends. Whom seemed pretty awed by my talent and performance. Which is the way you want to leave them every time you turn off the stage lights. New audiences are always your best gauge on how well you are performing. Because, theyve never heard you before. So, its totally new to them. Either you are going to rock them or run them out. I rocked them. :) There were a lot of musicians in the audience too. Which made the performance that much more rewarding, when they would come up and say, Wow. You being able to see Wow on their faces. Although nobody else really knew I was gone, even though thats the pressure I had been feeling in not having my full scope of vocal ability available for several years. Making each performance in that time frame incredibly stressful and mentally and emotionally draining. I can now say to myself, David you are back! To all I have ever known in vocal capability, range and quality. Good stuff. :) Much thanks to my buddy Kris Van Deusen for bringing me up for the gig. :)
