What are nightshades and why should some people avoid - TopicsExpress

What are nightshades and why should some people avoid them? Nightshades include potatoes, tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, eggplant, tomatillos, tamarios, pepinos, pimentos, paprika, and cayenne peppers. There are substances found in these vegetables called alkaloids. Alkaloids (4 different kinds) can impact the nervous system, digestion and joints in sensitive individuals. People with autoimmune conditions are most likely affected due to having a leaky gut. This is why it is recommended that people following an autoimmune diet avoid nightshades. Cooking lowers alkaloid content of nightshade foods by about 40-50%, therefore people who are sensitive to nightshades should avoid them even when cooked. Are you affected by nightshades? How do they affect you?
