What can I ever do without you? (First published in 2012) September 11 is annually a memorable day for me; not because of the tragedies that befell the world on this date in 2001. I was heralded into this world so many years before this notorious day when blood thirsty individuals crashlanded planes into the twin Towers. Since then, friends have continued to ask questions on why I was born on this date but I have always been up to the task of explaining which came first. Even if I was to be catapulted here after the incident, that doesn’t connect me to the event or make me a devil. My friends are always there to wish me best of luck and this has gone on since the 9/11 attacks. Meanwhile, this year’s September 11 was to be marred for me because of some domestic brouhaha, but for the ceaseless ‘buffdate’ messages from family members, friends, colleagues and other well wishers. I was overwhelmingly flabbergasted with these messages, even from friends that I thought had long forgotten that The Veteran existed. From my mum, Hajia Modupe Sanni, to my Dad, Hajj Ganiyu Sanni, my brothers-Ahmed, hakeem, Abayomi Sanni to my sisters- Hajia Adijat Salami, Hajia Afusat Yinus and Biodun, even the baby of the house, Pelumi Ameenat Sanni. I am proud of you all and may God make all our heart desires realities. My former coursemates from University of Lagos, my secondary school mates, my co staff at my present workplace and previous ones, you are all ‘wonderment’. I was almost moved to tears when some messages came in and the identities I found were those that I least expect something from. I, at a point, felt flattered because I know I don’t deserve all these messages. Even my teachers, lecturers and former bosses expressed their feelings. These are too much for me to bear because It could make me feel I am something or somebody, which I know it’s not true. As much as I tried to reply all messages, I couldn’t because some more were still showing their lovely faces on my blackberry. At a point I counted about a thousand or thereabout, but eventually I lost count. What a day with friends! Friends such as Faustina Funke Ahmed, Jhumoke Harmynat, Aliyu Bamalli , Omooba Ayoola Adekunle, Usman Ahmed Danbaba, Raifu Sheriffdeen Babs Tee, Iwatan Orire, Grace Ebhomenye, Kendra Ade Tony, Tope Jupiter, Chukwuma Oraegbu and Mathias Iteji, Shalom Shobande, Joseph Abosede, Omobolanle Sherifat Oluwalogbon, Gbonjubola Akintola, Adeshina Shakiru Abiola, Omotuase Olufemi Omojunukanbi, David Lanre Messan, Fadahunsi Temitope John, Oyebimpe Oyelekan, David Lanre Messan , adji Abiola Bakare, Salihu Lawan Maina, Omobolanle Sherifat Oluwalogbon,Adeshina Shakiru Abiola, Engr Ade Kazeem, Gbangba Olanrewaju Olaife, Nity Linda Mark, Abiodun Ajiboye, Oluwatoyin Adewumi, Opeoluwa Joseph Rufus, Ibilola Ajiboye Ogunshowobo, Ibrahim Lateef Olawale, FaithynaGod Kapricorn Daddie Rooney, Idowu Femi Michael, Olaniyan Morufat Abeke, Ola Bakare, Lolade Giwa, S Oludare Oliyide, Temiloluwa Adeyemi, Biebara Asan, Felicia Dina Dominic, Precious Silas Florence, Lara Ogbonyomi Babatunde , Ahamefule Onyeka Jennifer and Omooba Ayoola Adekunle. These are indeed inadequate as they are the few ones left on my phone when I was forced to be deleting messages as the phone was becoming too slow due to memory seizure by previous birthday messages you all sent. Please keep it up as the reward for things like this is more of it. Thank you all. Sanni Azeez Veteran Your Boy
