What happened tonight in #Ferguson is not something to be explained away as merely political, only theatrical, of no consequence, as justice served. What happened stands as disgraceful proof that our system places white lives above black lives, that the violent death of a young black man does not even deserve a trial. Racism is alive and well, systematized in such an insidious way that such a verdict by Fergusons grand jury is even possible, and, to some, a verdict made with clear conscience. May we, the privileged, the white, cast our eyes down in shame this night. May we look hard at ourselves, and our complicities. The anger and the grief flooding many of our television and computer screens tonight is the anger and grief of those with their backs against the wall, of our neighbors that live day after day within systems that refuse to recognize their humanity. May we recognize the system not as broken, but as constructed with injustice at its heart. May we hear that anger for what it is - proclamation, and truth. And may we respond to that proclamation with humility and integrity. Then, in that humility, we might shut up, roll up our sleeves, and join in the work that needs to be done. #blacklivesmatter
