What is meant by hating your family members? Why would Jesus give us this ultimatum? He was being followed by great numbers of people. It was kinda like being in the in crowd. People wanted to be part of this new wave of hope and miracles. They didnt want to be the ones to miss out. Jesus tells the crowd that they can follow, but if you want to be a disciple, you will need to know there is a cost, because more will be demanded of you. Think about how many people have been very active in their churches, and communities, and eventually, they disappear. They get tired and say, its time for someone else to do their fair share. I think most of us have been there. Jesus is telling them that, to be a disciple, you will need to give up everything, and make this a lifetime commitment. Is He saying, this isnt for the faint of heart? What holds you back from giving more? Are you a disciple, or a follower? Lord I have been a follower, but I know for me to give more, I need to give up things that keep me from You. May You guide me, and help me to remove the things that hold me back. Luke 14:25-33 Great crowds were traveling with Jesus, and he turned and addressed them, “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, ‘This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.’ Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whether with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation to ask for peace terms. In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”
