What should I write about tonights song? For starters, this is a song that Ive played before. I didnt actually play the Talking Heads version; I played a cover. I happened to hear it on the radio today, so I decided I should give you the original version. While I enjoy the Miles Fisher cover (especially the video), I prefer Talking Heads. This is a really nice love song, and thats something that David Byrne isnt keen on writing. Heres how David described the song on his self interview on the Stop Making Sense dvd: Thats a love song made up almost completely of non sequiturs, phrases that may have a strong emotional resonance but dont have any narrative qualities. Its a real honest kind of love song. I dont think Ive ever done a real love song before. Mine always had a sort of reservation, or a twist. I tried to write one that wasnt corny, that didnt sound stupid or lame the way many do. I think I succeeded; I was pretty happy with that. Some people on the internet have interpreted the song as kind of an anti-love song. They see the lyrics in a way that makes a person think whats the point of falling in love if our time on Earth is so fleeting? A common reason for this interpretation is the Naive Melody part of the title. In their minds, Talking Heads are undercutting the love idea in the song by calling it naive. In actuality, the naive portion is in fact a reference to the melody. The bass and guitar play the same thing throughout the entirety of the song. This came about from jamming to create the song, and the result was something that the band called a naive melody. So, contrary to the contrarian view of This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody), it actually is the sweet love song that you can hear in the lyrics. While the band did an actual video for the song, Im not a big fan of it. You can check it out here if you want: https://youtube/watch?v=DFeforW2ycI. I decided to go with the version from Stop Making Sense instead. It goes on a bit longer and was directed by Jonathan Demme. (Demme is best known for directing Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia.) Byrne is just as odd in both, so take your pick. He even dances with a lamp in the Stop Making Sense version. (An ode to Fred Astaire in the film Royal Wedding.) I wasnt sure what to write about this song, but it appears that Ive given you a novel to go with a simple little love song. - Mr. Big #TalkingHeads #ThisMustBeThePlace #JonathanDemme #StopMakingSense
