When I think back on events that changed absolutely everything for the entire world, and certainly changed those of us coming of age before and after, there are a few events that actually come to mind, especially for the children of the 1980s... Oklahoma City, Columbine, and of course September 11th, 2001. Most everyone can remember where they were, and the whispers of confusion as the first stories began to trickle from person to person. It was a world before Facebook, or Twitter, and most people my age at the time didnt even have cell phones, much less texting. We had to hear it from each other, from our friends, then our teachers, then the television. We didnt read it from some social network. We heard the horror in the voices of those around us. There was no mistaking tone or inflection that day. We saw the second tower being hit, as it happened in real life. Its something we can never un-see, and even today it is difficult for me to watch those images. Now, 13 years later I look at my son and wonder if and how I will be able to make him understand how the world changed. The way it affected us all. The way it was before and after. How terrified we all were about what would happen next. To quote a movie, one generations tragedy is the next ones joke, but it can never be. We can never forget the way the world changed that day, and we can never let those behind us misunderstand the importance of it all. God rest those souls, and God Bless America.
