When Mwai Kibaki took over power in 2003, he immediately gave a blanket amnesty to all students who had been suspended or expelled from public universities. Many of them who had been expelled as far back as 1982 went back and completed their degree courses and are now employed. Since then, hundreds of others have been expelled or suspended. KU has sent away close to 100. These students are suffering out here with no one to turn to. Some were out-rightly misled by Cord, nay ODM politicians who subsequently abandoned them in the streets of Nairobi. They are now appealing to H.E PRESIDENT Dr. Uhuru Kenyatta, to intervene and ask the universities to give them a similar amnesty. Some were expelled when they had only two months to complete their university studies. Yes, they may have been involved in activities that may have warranted such drastic action but they are young people with a future and should be given a second chance. I have met many of them and they are truly remorseful. As the Head of State will be awarding aged men and women State Honors this Jamuhuri Day, he may consider giving these young boys and girls an amnesty to complete their education. President Kenyatta has recently been honored with a doctorate degree by Kabarak University and it would be fair for him to let the students have the feeling of wearing the graduation gown and even fly in it to their villages. Likewise, the new UoN vice chancellor may wish to start a clean term by allowing back all those sent out of the institution, as a way of starting a blessed legacy. That is all they ask for.
