When it comes to American foreign/war policy is there a sadder or more pathetic paragraph than this one from the Washington Post on yesterdays insider attack in Afghanistan: The U.S. general who was shot and killed in an apparent insider attack in Kabul on Tuesday had served in the American military for more than three decades and was a key player in the current U.S. effort to stand up Afghan security forces. The current effort to stand up Afghan security forces -- is it possible to say that phrase with any kind of seriousness in the wake of yesterdays event? Were talking about an almost 13 year American debacle (among so many global debacles these days). The shooter managed to wound a German general and two Afghan ones as well in addition to other American troops, some evidently severely wounded. And on that same day, according to the Associated Press, there was another insider attack: The attack at Marshal Fahim National Defense University underscored the tensions that persist as the U.S. combat role winds down in Afghanistan - and it wasnt the only assault by an Afghan ally on coalition forces on Tuesday. In eastern Paktia province, an Afghan police guard exchanged fire with NATO troops near the governors office, provincial police said. The guard was killed in the gunfight. Its been so obvious for so long that we shouldnt have been in Afghanistan.
