When it comes to going ultra-distances, nothing can beat the Tarahumara Indians – not a racehorse, not a cheetah, not an Olympic marathoner. Heres how to train like one. 1. Improve your hops Skipping rope teaches you to move quickly and lightly on the balls of your feet. Mix your moves by skipping one-legged, from side to side, and while toe-tapping one foot at a time. When your hamstrings become too tight to clear the rope, call it a day. 2. Sprint for distance Short bursts teach efficiency that carries over to longer runs. Focus on quick leg turnover and a feathery-light footfall as you run your own 100m sprints. Again, let your form be your guide. When you get sloppy – stop. 3. Gird your frame It’s one thing to find balance, it’s another to have the strength to maintain it. This pre-run workout (below), devised by endurance sport coach Eric Orton, can help by building your muscle equilibrium and core stabilisation.
