When people are seriously injured or killed at a motorsport event - TopicsExpress

When people are seriously injured or killed at a motorsport event it always reflects badly on the sport we love. It is also very, very difficult to find the words to offer condolence to those involved and directly affected. Their world has changed forever. Like everyone else who loves our sport, we at Turner Autosport are deeply saddened and shocked by the events that occurred at last weekends Jim Clark Rally. What also saddens us is the way in which the mainstream media, who do not understand our sport, take it upon themselves to offer righteousness and criticism, taking the moral high-ground in a most hypocritical way. There is an on-going investigation into the incidents and until the findings are published we wont know the facts about what caused these accidents. A lot of questions are still to be answered. However, what we do know is that every single person who was directly involved with organising the rally put safety first in everything they did. They always have and always will. Likewise the competitors and crews go to great pains and expense to ensure the cars and their occupants are suitably protected. They simply wouldnt be allowed to compete if this was not the case. Those who spectate come for the excitement and thrills that close viewing offers with rallying. The spectators are made aware of the dangers and advised on where it is safe to view. They get as much of a buzz from it as everyone else involved. They are also there to support the sport and ensure it has longevity; spending time and money just to be there and witness these machines being driven to their limits. Unfortunately, the limits of these machines are sometimes breached because the very nature of competition - in any sport - is to push as hard as possible to get the best result. In motorsport, when these limits are breached, sometimes the outcome is unpredictable. But we accept that risk. All of us. Fans, organisers, and competitors alike. The events at the Jim Clark Rally were accidents, pure and simple. No-one intended for anyone to get hurt, of that we can be sure. But we would like to say this: To those who attended the incidents and gave help, you deserve our praise. To the rally crews involved, we hope you can find a way to cope. To those who were injured, we hope you recover swiftly. To those who lost their lives, rest in peace.
