When secular Americans object to under God in the pledge or to the - TopicsExpress

When secular Americans object to under God in the pledge or to the national motto In God We Trust they do so because those statements, taken literally, are unambiguous religious truth claims. Such statements do not simply suggest that America has a religious heritage; they instead declare as a matter of truth that America is under a god and that all Americans actually trust in a god. (In fact, since both the pledge and motto utilize the singular upper-case version of God, they obviously endorse monotheistic religion over others.) As such, those who do not want their public schools telling children every morning that the nation is under God are not attempting to deny the historical influence of religion, but to stop the governmental practice of asserting a specific religious truth claim. ~David Niose, author of _Nonbeliever Nation: The Rise of Secular Americans_ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2012)
