When the new Auditorium was opened in (1937?) it was part of several projects completed by the WPA and a big celebration took place. I was in Harrison Grade School and was asked by a teacher to be in a tableau for the ceremonies. I believe I was about 9 years-old. I had no clear idea what a tableau really was but understood it to be a sort of a play. On the day of the dedication I indeed became a part of the this historical event. The idea was to represent some of the symbols of Oklahomas Great Seal based partly on the Native American history of the country. I found myself feeling embarrassed standing on the stage wearing what seemed to me to be a tea towel. Now I knew what a tableau was. I had no speaking part so I now know that I was chosen not so much for my acting ability as the fact that I am Native American - Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Looking back I am glad to have been a part of this little bit of Shawnee history.
