When the utility tarriffs were capped at a new rate of almost 78%,my heart was gladdened.I knew this move will allow various IPPs (Independent Power Producers) to bolt into the country with full VIM.Our celebrated dumso dumso finally had a panacea.A whole lot of benefits were to follow in the trail of this increament: jobs, taxes,a boost in the secondary sector, just to mention a few.A few days along the line, the TUC showed its ugly head on the scene pressuring government to either decrease the tariffs or face a nationwide strike. Hmm..,the usual Ghanaian politician in a bid to appease the masses succumb to this withstanding the fact that it was uneconomical.A yet-to-be mobilized 400 million Ghana cedis has already been allocated in the name of subsidies.Subsidies are always a burden on a country like ours which finds it almost impossible to mobilize revenue, leaving the govt a big debtor of most producers of essential services. Most IPPs on hearing this news will default in setting up in the country knowing business wont be yielding enough. We tend to loose a whole lots of benefits.Alternatively, govt should have upheld this tariff increament to promote IPPs. With more IPPs,our power problems would have been solved.I believe we could even have produced power in excess which could have been exported to other countries for revenue. The revenue earned will then be used to augment our already empty coffers and even some used to offset tariffs in the future. The Mahama administration should reconsider this move and just allow the increament to hold
